The Gentry Academy boys’ and girls’ hockey teams have announced their captains for their 2023-2024 seasons. At the end of each season, team members vote on which student athletes will represent the squad as a captain. The announcement of next season’s captains is formally announced at each team’s end of season banquet.
At Gentry Academy captains are selected by peers, unlike at some schools where coaches make the selection. This form of selection is in step with Gentry’s focus on leadership and building tomorrow’s leaders.
Captains are not selected on athletic ability alone. They are selected for things such as leadership, work ethic and commitment to academics.
Megan Stone, who is the director of leadership at Gentry Academy helps to ensure all students receive leadership training. Along with her colleagues, Ellie Neumann and David Donohoe, the trio teaches daily leadership classes to all Gentry students in grades 5-12.
“Our students are becoming very compassionate and strong leaders,” said Stone. “Leadership takes many forms. Our athletic programs are fortunate to have such great student leaders.”
Both the girls’ and boys’ hockey teams at Gentry Academy are finding success, thanks in part to excellent leadership among student athletes.
The Gentry girls team won the state title this past February and the boys team placed second in their section. Because of committed student leaders the future appears bright for both programs.

“These student athletes, selected by their teammates are great examples of Gentry Academy students who excel in and out of the classroom,” said Stone. “It is a prestigious honor that is the product of commitment to education, hard work and leading by example.”
